Precision 5-axis CNC machining and multi-tasking mill-turn for aluminum aerospace and space components, including a part currently operating on NASA’s InSight Mars lander
Facilities
R&D Machine
R&D Machine builds flight-critical parts on multi-axis platforms for aerospace, defense, and space programs. Founded in 1992, the company has spent more than three decades building parts where accuracy, documentation, and process control matter from the first setup to final inspection. Justin Kovscek serves as Vice President and General Manager.
The facility is especially strong in aluminum aerospace components, complex geometries, and parts that require careful machining strategy, including flight system housings, structural components, and space-related parts that need repeatable accuracy across demanding production requirements. One of R&D Machine’s components is currently operating on NASA’s InSight Mars lander, a level of application that reflects the facility’s focus on precision, process control, and reliability.
Since joining the Compass Precision platform in April 2022, R&D Machine has continued to expand its capabilities. The addition of the Okuma Multus w/Robot gave the shop multi-tasking mill-turn capability with automated loading, reducing setups, limiting part handling, and supporting longer production runs with consistent output. As part of the Compass Precision platform, R&D Machine gives customers the aerospace focus of a dedicated specialist backed by the broader capacity, shared systems, and coordinated support of a multi-site manufacturing platform.

Capabilities
Where They Excel
Aluminum Aerospace and Space Components
R&D Machine’s work sits above the Earth’s surface more often than not. Most parts are aluminum, carry complicated geometries, and demand the process discipline that comes from decades of aerospace and space program work, where a documentation gap matters as much as a dimensional one.
Core Capabilities
Shared Platform Capabilities
5-Axis CNC Milling
Complex aerospace structures, housings, and aluminum components that need multi-face access, compound angles, and tight positional accuracy run on dedicated 5-axis capacity.
Multi-Tasking Mill-Turn with Robotic Loading
The Okuma Multus w/Robot handles turning, milling, and angled features on one automated platform, reducing manual handling and supporting sustained production.
3 and 4-Axis Vertical Milling
Production work that depends on consistent dimensional output across the full run stays on dedicated vertical milling capacity.
Turning with Y-Axis and Live Tooling
Cylindrical components that also need milled features complete without moving the part through multiple setups.
CMM Dimensional Inspection
GD&T verification, automated measurement routines, and customer-specific documentation run throughout production.
Material Experience
Aluminum alloys, titanium, Inconel, stainless steel, and other materials used in aerospace, defense, and space programs.
